Who We Are

Kerlie's Kitchen is the 'brainwave' of me; Nina McKerlie, married to my wonderful hubby, and mum of 2 boys, who's rapidly approaching 40.

I've always had a 'bit of a thing' for food, enjoying creating it, eating it, talking about it, and working with it.

I think my passion for all things foodie is genetically embedded in every cell of my being, my grandfather was a chef in the Army Catering Corp, my mum is a brilliant cook totally self taught an ably assisted by my dad who, for as long as I can remember, has been fondly known as the 'bottomless dustbin with hollow legs', and I can count on my fingers the number of times my dad has turned down food.

My mum taught me from an early age about the joy of food, how simple ingredients can make he most amazing play stuff.....pastry. and boy do I love pastry! There is something so tactile about that sticky, stretchy dough that can be turned, with only the smallest of effort, into the most amazing delicacies.

My early creations were usually made of mud, with the odd lump of pastry incorporated, all of these muddy delights were dutifully sampled by daddy at the end of the day.

Growing up, being an only child, I spent a lot of quality time 'helping' mum in the kitchen, but never ever helped with the dishes! My mum always made cakes, and made me some of the most fantastic birthday cakes; teddy bears, hedgehogs and princess castles to name just a few, it was the start of a wonderful journey.

When my children were born the need to make cakes for their birthdays was overwhelming. We started with Bagpuss, followed by Teletubbies, Bob the Builder, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, Football Shirts, Footballs, Football Pitches, Nintendo DS, Trophies, Winnie the Pooh....the list continues!

My family soon became uninterested in my various cake creations, so the neighbours got cake parcels... then a friend asked me to make a cake for her daughter, then her friend asked me.. and so it mushroomed to what is now Kerlie's Kitchen.
